Evaluation & Diagnosis

I conduct a comprehensive speech and language evaluation using standardized and non-standardized tools. A client intake form will be filled out to obtain a case history. This will include medical history, patient/family interview, a review of auditory, visual, and cognitive status, and identifying potential for effective intervention strategies. The SLP will determine a diagnosis and treatment plan.  The plan will either be habilitative (help a client keep, learn, or improve skills) or rehabilitative (help a client keep, get back/return, and improve skills) depending on the circumstance.

AAC Consultation

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) describes a way of communicating that can either supplement or compensate (either temporarily or permanently) for the impairment or disability patterns of individuals with severe expressive communications disorders. There are multiple avenues to achieve the desired outcome.  Two modes include Unaided and Aided communication.  Unaided refers to non-spoken means of natural communication (gestures, facial expressions, ASL (American Sign Language).  Aided communication refers to a mode that requires some external support (communication boards with symbols, handheld devices, etc. ). Within Aided communication, there are Low Tech options and High Tech options.  Low tech refers to the communication partner seeing the symbols, such as an alphabet board. High tech refers to devices such as Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs), the device will read the message put together with symbols out loud.  The consultation will educate the caregiver further and give guidance on options for the client.
